Neurosurgeon Penfield did some pioneering research on human brain and mind after following the pioneering work of another Nobel Prize winning Neurosurgeon Sherrington. Penfield worked on Epileptic patients under local anaesthetics to understand what is human mind by applying electrodes on specific regions of human brain under investigation in his patients..He came up with 3 salient conclusions:

1. He was unable to stimulate intellectual thought
2. He felt inability of seizures to cause intellectual thought
3. He could not stimulate will..  
4. From that he concluded with 1000’s of patients research that human Mind is separate from human brain..
